A whole year since Kingston’s trampoline squad last bought success to the borough at the London Youth Games, an annual event held at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, and we were all looking forward to trying to retain this title. 2006 saw the team win gold after beating all other boroughs to claim the title, up 9 places from the 10th position we found ourselves in the previous year. After yet another year of trials to select this year’s team, made up of 4 competitors and 4 reserves, we were all ready to give our best performances to retain first place. The Kingston competitors for this year were Ross Harding, Cassy Weitz, Laura Cowling and Jessica Moore, all of us were quite excited as we had big shoes to fill after last year's success.
The day began for all of us with an early start in order to catch the coach to take us to the event. On arrival, we made our way to the Kingston tent to collect our t-shirts and jumpers that are provided each year for every team in all of the different sports. After registering ourselves, we were ready to begin and the competition got underway. Approximately half an hour was set aside for a warm-up, with each of the 100 or so competitors at this event first competing their set routine, and then a voluntary which is comprised of 10 different moves or skills, totalling under the required difficulty limit. Every single member of the Kingston squad competed two solid routines, a view that was definitely reflected in the judges’ marks that were calculated for each participant.
In between our routines we watched some of the other competitors, only to find that we had some very stiff competition and keeping the borough’s title was not going to be easy! For each of our routines our team coach, Rob Baker, gave us encouragement and the reserves were very supportive, always on hand when they were needed. When all routines had been completed, the competition area was cleared and a dance group kept us entertained while scores and places were finalised. Meanwhile, teams were organised into alphabetical order before the awards ceremony took place. First of all, medals were awarded to the top three male and female individuals. Unexpectedly it turned out that I had finished in first place individually! The team results were announced in reverse order.
After 3rd place was read out, it was announced that unusually, there was a tie for 1st place and cheers burst out from the Kingston seating area in the stands – we had won for the second year running, beating 22 other boroughs and tying with the team from Bromley. After many photographs we were free to leave the event and look at some of the other sports that were still taking place.
The London Youth Games is a fantastic sporting event which I was proud to take part in and contribute towards winning for the borough. I feel it unites younger competitors from many sports, each year attracting over 20,000 young Londoners. With over 30 different sports catering even for those with disabilities, it is a great time to compete against others, an event which I plan to enter again next year.
